Global warming has a negative effect on food production. Rising temperatures are already having a negative impact, making agriculture and livestock production more difficult in areas where water is scarce. In addition, the change in temperatures is linked to the spread of diseases and pests on crops and livestock and is helping to erode soil due to strong winds. [55] Another threat to agricultural productivity is the increase in natural disasters such as floods or excessive drought in different regions, which are already affecting yields. Higher temperatures hinder the absorption and retention of water by plants and increase its loss through their leaves, which negatively affects their development and yields. [56]<\/span><\/p>\n\n

\nBecause of rising temperatures, some plants begin their growing season earlier in the spring, before the insects that pollinate them have developed. Due to global warming, nearly half of all insect species are expected to decrease their populations, and a third may even become extinct. [57] Some pesticides used in conventional agriculture, in addition to contributing to air pollution, have strong negative effects on important pollinators such as the honey bee. [58] This, in addition to disrupting food chains and ecosystem balance, would lead to reduced yields, as 75% of the world's leading food crops depend on pollinator populations. [59]
\nRising sea temperatures due to global warming in turn leads to habitat shifts for many fish species, which would disrupt the ecosystem balance and fisheries that are vital to most coastal and island communities.
